Working their beats: Iowa women in law enforcement
This portion of the thesis was completed during my time as a Teaching Assistant and student in John Kimmich-Javier's advanced photojournalism classes at the University of Iowa.
Kimmich-Javier and other professional photojournalists believe in following your subject(s) and absorbing their environment, so that's what I attempted to do as I went on ride-alongs, worked in jailhouses and attended elementary classes with some of Iowa's finest law enforcement professionals.
These pictures depict women in four different Iowa cities--Cedar Rapids, Clinton, Coralville and Iowa City--working as police officers, school resource officers, jail employees and more; and all are outnumbered by men. But that doesn't change their dedication to their work.
